UPM biorefinery: A beacon for Leuna

The Finnish company UPM is ramping up the world's first industrial-scale biochemical refinery at the Leuna Chemical Park. Nevertheless, the mood in the Central German chemical triangle remains subdued.
It is currently one of the largest single investments at a chemical site in Europe and one of the largest projects worldwide in the field of biochemistry: Just over four years after the groundbreaking ceremony, the Finnish company UPM is ramping up production at its first industrial-scale biorefinery at the Leuna Chemical Park. "This is not only the largest, but also the boldest investment in biochemistry to date," says Harald Dialer, who is responsible for the biochemicals and biofuels business on the UPM Executive Board. The €1.3 billion biorefinery in Leuna is considered a flagship project that will symbolize the transformation of the industry and the future of the chemical site.
