Typhoon Kajiki: Vietnam brings nearly 600,000 people to safety


A typhoon is moving through the South China Sea with wind speeds of around 175 kilometers per hour. The cyclone is now approaching the Vietnamese coast.
A large-scale evacuation is being prepared in Vietnam due to the approaching Typhoon Kajiki. A total of more than 150,000 households – approximately 587,000 people – are affected in four provinces in the country's central coastal region, Vietnamese state media reported. Heavy rain and flooding were expected there. Boats were not allowed to depart in seven coastal provinces.
According to the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center, "Kajiki" was traveling in the South China Sea with sustained winds of around 175 kilometers per hour. The tropical cyclone is expected to gain some strength initially before making landfall in Vietnam on Monday.
According to meteorologists, the Chinese island of Hainan is expected to be the first to feel the effects of the typhoon. According to the official Xinhua News Agency, more than 20,000 people were evacuated there. In the city of Sanya, schools, offices, and shops were temporarily closed, and public transport was suspended.
