Trump promises Ukraine security guarantees - how far they extend remains open

For Ukrainian President Zelensky, the peace negotiations for his country are primarily about security guarantees for the post-war period. This is what he is asking US President Trump for.
Donald Trump promised Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington that the US would guarantee Ukraine's security in any agreement to end the war with Russia. However, as Reuters reports, the scope of these guarantees is still unclear.
Trump assured the press after his meeting with Zelensky and other European leaders that "when it comes to security, a lot of help is coming," adding that European countries would be involved. "They're the first line of defense because they're there, but we're going to help them," Trump said, according to Reuters.
Zelensky praised the commitment as "a major step forward" and emphasized that the guarantees could be "specified in writing within the next few days." It was also announced that Ukraine had offered to purchase approximately $90 billion worth of American weapons.
The Ukrainian president described his conversation with Trump as positive, saying he had discussed many sensitive issues with him. Ukraine wants to end the war, Zelensky emphasized. He also hoped Trump would help with humanitarian issues, such as the repatriation of children and young people abducted by Russia.
Zelensky reiterated that he would like to have the US President present at a possible meeting with Kremlin President Vladimir Putin . The US President wants to help organize the summit. While Putin has repeatedly stated that he is willing to meet with Zelensky, he repeatedly cites the condition that fundamental issues must be clarified beforehand.
