Saxony-Anhalt's CDU chairman Sven Schulze considers the debate within the Union about a German contribution to possible security guarantees for Ukraine to be misguided.

"Personally, I don't believe the Bundeswehr would currently be in a position to participate in such a mission with soldiers," the designated top candidate for next year's state elections told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" (FAS). Of course, Germany must always participate in supporting Ukraine; "that is our duty," Schulze continued. However, he doesn't see at the moment "that it would be the right way to even discuss stationing German soldiers on Ukrainian soil." With regard to the performance of the CDU/CSU federal government so far, Schulze, who is currently Minister of Economic Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), said: If you look at the polls, you "do not yet see the trust that the CDU/CSU and also a federal government needs."

Schulze called on the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to avoid public disputes and, after the first 100 days, which were heavily dominated by foreign policy issues, to now focus on domestic policy: "That's what people expect. And I believe that the mood will then improve." Schulze called for speed, particularly regarding Merz's desired "economic turnaround," and opposed holding back potentially unpopular decisions due to upcoming elections. "We always have some kind of election in Germany," Schulze told the FAS: "We need decisions now. The companies that are currently in trouble also need help now."
