Belgium reverses nuclear phase-out

Four reactors are currently in operation in Belgium: two at the Doel power plant on the Dutch border and two at the Tihange nuclear power plant near Liège, about 50 kilometers as the crow flies from the German border. The reactors, which have been in operation for decades, were originally scheduled to be shut down this year.
In the wake of the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine, the previous government had already decided to extend the operating life of the Tihange 3 and Doel 4 reactors, both of which had gone online in 1985. The French energy company Engie pledged in March to continue operating both reactors for the next ten years.
