2 minsProper skincare is essential. Not only for preventing skin aging, but also for makeup that stays put. But finding the right routine for you isn't easy. Star makeup artist Serena Goldenbaum reveals which skincare steps are essential for perfectly fitting makeup.
Stars like Heidi Klum, Sylvie Meis, and Frauke Ludowig trust Serena Goldenbaum's trained eye for facial care and makeup. She knows how our skin and its needs change over time and why we need to treat it differently than we did in our 20s. Celebrity makeup artist Serena Goldenbaum explains what's important in skincare now and how our makeup can shine when we're over 50.
Star makeup artist Serena Goldenbaum: "Skincare is first"For Serena Goldenbaum, well-nourished skin is the ultimate foundation for makeup – especially for women over 50. But what does that mean? Our skin needs more moisture and lipids as we age, explains the star makeup artist. This is due to the age-related reduction in the production of our own substances such as hyaluronic acid or lipids, which normally ensure elasticity and firmness. If we can no longer produce sufficient amounts of these ourselves, we need to inject the moisturizers into the skin layers, for example, using a more greasy moisturizer , recommends Serena Goldenbaum. The expert says that you can already notice the need for care when you touch your skin before you have applied moisturizer in the morning after getting up. A good moisturizer is essential for all skin types anyway.
Those who want even more moisture for their skin can also apply a moisturizing serum . Mature skin, in particular, relies on this extra care step to quench its thirst for moisture.
If you have mature skin, you might also want a moisturizing serum.

As a general rule, the star makeup artist explains: The better moisturized the skin is, the less makeup will settle into wrinkles. This way, even without makeup, the skin looks more moisturized, nourished, and fresher . And the makeup applied over it can truly shine.

Many people struggle with dry patches, especially around the eyes. However, we should avoid overly greasy eye creams before applying makeup, explains Serena Goldenbaum. It's better to apply them the night before . This prevents the mascara from turning into panda eyes.
It's fundamentally important that the skincare product is given enough time to absorb after each step, says the makeup expert. Otherwise, the skincare and makeup could roll off again.
Skin care can do even more: prevent skin aging! And how does that work best? Serena Goldenbaum relies on sun protection . For her, SPF is a must—even on overcast days! It can prevent the development of dark spots and uneven skin , which are caused by aging and environmental influences. SPF is now also found in foundations and powders. However, the amount needed to actually achieve the stated level of protection is usually not suitable for everyday use. Therefore: Include serum, moisturizer, and SPF as basics in your pre-makeup skincare routine!
