I've always felt that denim trends are best understood as a clock, with baggy jeans on one side and skinny jeans on the other (low-rise and high-rise have their own clock). The clock moves in a circle, sometimes leaning toward baggy, sometimes toward skinny. Right now, we've left "baggy o'clock" behind us and are moving toward "skinny o'clock." In other words, it's the perfect time to invest in a pair of slim-fit jeans. I'm not talking about the super-tight ones of the past decade, of course, but the classic jeans beloved by actress Dakota Johnson .
Dakota Johnson has long been a champion of cigarette jeans —so named because of their similar shape to their namesake. She wears them in New York and Los Angeles, on the street and at the airport, in summer as well as winter. She pairs them with boots and loafers, with skinny and chunky sneakers . And not because they're trendy (she's worn them forever), but because they're a solid choice and look good with everything, all the time. But now it seems the world is following Dakota's lead. Because while the much-maligned skinny jeans are making a comeback, many street stylers are opting for the more timeless skinny trousers.

British Vogue shopping editor Joy Montgomery has long been a fan of cigarette jeans. "Fit-wise, I'd personally prefer a more subtle slim fit to the skinny jeans of yesteryear (Levi's 'Shaping Slim Jeans' fit the bill)," she wrote earlier this year. She added, "Styling-wise, I like to pair them with knee-high boots, an oversized jacket, and a subtle top, like I've been seeing all over Fashion Week this season." I agree with Joy on this point. Super-tight skinny jeans can still be reminiscent of Alexa Chung and the like from the 2010s, whereas slim-fit jeans à la Dakota have a more classic feel, echoing '90s minimalism.
We've also seen slim-fit jeans on many runways in recent seasons. See: the slouchy skinny jeans in the Fall/Winter 2025 collections from Diesel and Dsquared2, or the skinny jeans in Loewe's Spring/Summer 2025 collection. And Dakota Johnson isn't the only star to embrace cigarette jeans. Bella Hadid has spent a lot of time this year wearing straight-leg jeans, while Daisy Edgar-Jones also regularly opts for skinny jeans.
The heyday of baggy jeans may well be over (at least for a while). And they're about to be replaced by chic slim-fit jeans. Dakota Johnson is already showing us how to style them...
