Osnabrück (ots) - During the current heat wave, the DLRG (German Swimming Association) is urging special attention when swimming to avoid fatal swimming accidents. DLRG President Ute Vogt told the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" (NOZ): "We cannot monitor every square meter of lake, every meter of river, and every kilometer of our coastline. That's why it's so important that people are aware of the potential dangers and exercise caution when bathing and swimming." The DLRG appeals to everyone to "be cautious and keep a cool head despite the heat." Those who follow the bathing rules, drink enough fluids, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and avoid alcohol and other drugs while swimming can enjoy refreshment in extreme heat. "It is especially safe at supervised bathing areas inland and in swimming pools," Vogt said.

According to the DLRG (German Swimming Association), the majority of drownings occur across all age groups. "While recklessness and high spirits are particularly common among younger men, older men are more likely to overestimate their swimming abilities or experience health problems," Vogt said. In many cases, the victims are unsafe in the water or cannot swim at all.
