DIHK boss calls for Whit Monday to be removed as a public holiday
Berlin – The President of the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), Peter Adrian, advocates for abolishing Whit Monday as a public holiday and calls on workers to work longer hours. "Our labor productivity is stagnating," he told "Bild am Sonntag." Compared to OECD countries, employees in Germany work an average of 1,350 hours per year, compared to 1,750. "That's a difference of 400 hours. We have to address that." Adrian suggested abolishing a public holiday: "Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with Whit Monday." However, he knew that many see it differently. Adrian also said that more full-time work was needed in Germany: "It would be important for more people to be able to work full-time – especially women. For that, we need good childcare, for example."
