Monkeys from Asia and Africa make tools for cracking nuts, creating artifacts that confound even anthropologists.

Stone products are hallmarks of the Stone Age – they withstood the test of time and did not rot away like products made of bone or plant material, which also played an important role during the Stone Age. But stones do not decay – and anthropologists have dated stone tools from the Oldowai Gorge in northern Tanzania to be up to 2.9 million years old. The ancestors of people living today once pounded rubble with targeted blows, creating sharp edges. This type of targeted processing distinguishes them from other relatives of humans.
