The underrated country home to Europe’s most beautiful bay

As summer draws to an end, many Brits are looking for a final getaway in order to soak up the last of the rays.

With temperatures still high in other holiday hotspots, a refreshing dip is high on the list of priorities for most travellers.

A new list by car rental experts Sixt outlines the bluest waters in Europe, and the top spot is one you would likely not have thought of.

If you’ve never heard of the Bay of Kotor you’re probably not alone, yet it is probably one of Europe’s best kept secrets.

Located in the Adriatic Sea in southwestern Montenegro, the bay has been named by as the bluest body of water in Europe.

It is framed against a stunning mountainous backdrop, and the nearby town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its beautiful cathedral and medieval streets.

Despite UK searches for ‘Kotor Montenegro’ spiking by 100% in the past month, it is still relatively unknown, and the perfect place to visit for those wanting to avoid the crowds.

Second on the list was The Blue Grotto, found in Malta, which is home to sea caves, natural rock formations and of course, beautifully blue waters.

Tourism in Malta is currently booming, with it having one of the highest increases in tourism in Europe. The had led to restrictions on several hotspots, yet The Blue Grotto is the place to go if you want to avoid the crowds.

Taking the third spot is Lake Bled in Slovenia, which is one of the most serene locations on the continent.

With a recent surge of popularity on TikTok, the lake is perfect for a tranquil escape, offering traditional wooden boat rides, peaceful swims or a scenic walk along the lakeside path.
