Stop flying to Majorca - head to these 6 beautiful and cheap alternatives instead

Spain remains one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits, and Majorca is often top of the list. But while the island offers sun, sea and beautiful beaches, it also gets extremely crowded during the peak summer months. With mass tourism now a growing concern across parts of Spain, some regular visitors are choosing to look elsewhere.
“Majorca has historically been one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe,” said Laura Evans-Fisk, the head of digital and engagement at Eurochange. “But it can get extremely busy in summer, and we’re seeing more travellers looking for quieter, more authentic options.” To help, travel experts at Eurochange have revealed six affordable alternatives across Europe, with sunny weather, far fewer crowds, and most importantly, cheap beer.
Mdina, Malta
If you love wandering the narrow streets of Palma’s old town, Mdina in Malta might be the perfect alternative. Known as the 'silent city', it’s one of Europe’s best-preserved walled towns and offers a peaceful retreat with a warm, dry climate.
Laura said: “Mdina has a similar charm to Palma, but with far fewer tourists. It’s ideal for travellers who enjoy culture, history and a slower pace.”
According to experts at eurochange, Airbnbs are available from just £22 per night, while a beer costs around £3.19 and a typical meal is priced at £14.34. Game of Thrones fans might also recognise parts of the city, several scenes were filmed here.

For those seeking nature and adventure, La Gomera in the Canary Islands ticks all the boxes. The island is full of stunning cliffs, volcanic landscapes and lush forests, with Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO site, right at its heart.
“La Gomera offers the same mountain-meets-coastline feel as Majorca, but it’s much quieter and less commercialised,” said Laura. “It’s perfect for hiking, stargazing and those who want to switch off.”
According to eurochange, hotels start from around £50 per night, while beer is just £1.99 and meals average £11.95.

Located on the Costa Brava, Llafranc is a relaxed seaside town known for its clear water and family-friendly beach. The town’s curved bay is popular with swimmers, and nearby cliff paths connect it to charming neighbours like Calella de Palafrugell.
Laura said: “Llafranc has that laid-back beach vibe that many people go to Majorca for. It’s also a great choice for food lovers, the seafood and Catalan cuisine here are excellent.”
Experts at eurochange say hotel rooms average around £189 per night, with local beer priced at £2.39 and meals costing about £11.55. It’s a little more expensive than other options, but still cheaper than Majorca in peak season.

Carvoeiro is a quieter corner of Portugal’s Algarve coast, ideal for families or anyone looking to avoid crowded beaches. The town is full of whitewashed houses, calm bays and excellent spots for sea kayaking.
“Carvoeiro is great if you want sunshine, coastal walks and great value for money,” said Laura. “It’s small but has everything you need, and you can still find Airbnbs at really low prices.”
According to eurochange, accommodation starts at around £22 per night, with beers costing just £1.99 and meals priced at roughly £9.56. The rock formations at Algar Seco are a must-see at sunset.

Lassithi, in eastern Crete, is far less crowded than other Greek islands, but no less stunning. With quiet beaches, mountain villages and olive groves, it offers a slower, more traditional Greek experience.
Laura said: “If you're after peace, good food and sunshine, Lassithi is ideal. It’s perfect for anyone wanting to avoid packed resorts.”
Eurochange experts say Airbnb stays are available from £32 per night, with beer priced at around £3.98 and meals averaging just £8.76. The area is also known for olive oil and honey production, which visitors can sample on local farm tours.
