Secret Mediterranean city £20 flight away world’s best for last minute September holiday

September is here, and the school holidays are officially over, meaning now can be the perfect time for a last-minute getaway to extend summer and catch some sun before the dark nights take over.

While France, Spain and Italy are the top spots for British tourists, anybody who’s been to Venice will know that crowds can often ruin any chance of a relaxing trip.

But one place that is often ignored for its more popular neighbours has been named as the perfect place to soak up some September sunshine, and what’s better? Flights can cost as little as £20.

Nestled at the most northerly point of Croatia, and just kilometres away from both Slovenia and Italy, the Istrian peninsula is one of the most underrated destinations in Europe.

Surrounded by the blue turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea, the place is ideal for those looking for adventure around the coast, both culturally and culinary.

Istria is often overlooked for it's southern neighbours of Dubrovnik or Split but can be a better option to dodge the crowds. Ranked as one of Lonely Planet’s top September destinations, the guide wrote: “Overflowing with asparagus, olives and oysters, there are few tastier destinations than Istria, the triangular peninsula nudging into the Adriatic in far northwest Croatia.

“And there are few tastier times to explore Istria than September, when grapes are harvested and truffles ripen beneath the forest floor.”

The Istrians love their truffles, a wonder around the region's main city of Pula, you’ll be met with market stalls and shops all selling the gastronomic delicacy, with its own crisps, in oil or even whole.

To bank up some calories to then devour all of its delightful Adriatic cuisine, a walk around the ancient city, and you’ll be met with its giant Roman amphitheatre. Easily mistaken for the Colosseum, the Pula Arena is the only ancient theatre to have all four side towers entirely preserved.

As with much of the Croatian coastline, the beaches are primarily pebbly with some rocky coves, rare sandy spots and surrounded by lush greenery.

Rugged islands also line the peninsula, making the perfect backdrop for the sun to peak over, creating a landscape you're sure not to forget.

After a day dipping in the sea, you have worked up a thirst, and lucky for any wine drinkers, Croatia produces some wonderful wines.

The guide added: “But for the real gastro treats, crank up the calf muscles and explore the truffle-centric hilltop settlements of medieval Motovun, Buzet and tiny Hum in the north, and the wine regions around Buje and Momjan to the northwest – white Malvasia and red Teran are top local tipples.”

Ryanair flies direct to Pula from a few UK airports with flights in September costing as little as £23 at the time of writing. For those not wanting a full trip abroad, the guide also suggests a September getaway to the Cotswolds.
