If you are an avid traveller you likely think that you know the ins and outs of how a flight works, however there is plenty that goes on behind the scenes that most passengers are completely unaware of.

In order to protect our safety, flight attendants have a lot of things they must tick off before takeoff, during the flight, and before and after landing. It turns out that they actually use a secret language to help communication while onboard.

Cabin crew use secret code words to communicate about passengers and situations, sometimes for fun and sometimes for serious matters.

A common example is 'Bob' which means 'best on board', referring to a good looking passenger. 'Code Adam' is used for a missing child, 'galley' refers to the onboard kitchen, and 'blue juice' references the water in the lavatory, indicating it needs to be replenished.

One cabin crew member, named Miva, recently took to TikTok to speak about the secret language.

The TUI worker said: "Let's confused non aviators India Alpha Mike...Mike India Victor Alpha, Alpha November Delta Yankee Oscar Uniform?". This translates to 'I am Miva and you?'.

It turns out that cabin crew often us this secret letter trick to communicate. So they say random words, but the other worker understands by piecing together the first letter of each word.

Another crew member Jennie, who has built a following under the name @jeenie.weenie on social media, also took to social media to enlighten us about the secret vocabulary they use at 30,000-feet. She said: "If you've been on a flight, you've probably heard flight attendants use words that you don't understand... this is what they mean."

She clarified the cabin codes, saying: "If you've ever heard flight attendants call each other L1, L2, R1 or R2. We're just calling each other the areas that we're designated to."

Jennie also said that the crew remember beverage orders with Hollywood-inspired codes, adding: "When you hear flight attendants say Tom Cruise, we use this as a trick to remember where tea and coffee goes. Tom Cruise - T and C. Tea here and coffee here."

Talking about another code word they use, she added: "If you ever hear a flight attendant say they had to flip flop, please go easy on them. It means they had to embark on a red eye flight, land, get little to no sleep then wake up the next morning and get on a flight."
