Europe's seaside village with hardly any tourists that’s nestled on a popular island

Nestled on the southern coast of a popular island lies a picturesque seaside fishing village famous for its colourful boats and fish restaurants. Located just over seven miles from Malta’s capital Valletta, Marsaxlokk is a typical fishing village with an authentic Maltese flavour.

Around Marsaxlokk, you will see luzzu boats, vibrant little vessels adorned in every colour. The fishing boats are responsible for the bustling fish market, with fresh produce for all. The quaint village has remained relatively untouched meaning visitors can stroll along the picturesque harbour without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists making it the perfect escape from the hustle of city life.

Malta is experiencing a surge in tourism with the country seeing a total of 3.56 million tourists in 2024, a nearly 20% increase compared to 2023.

However, Marsaxlokk has been able to shield itself from overtourism.

Marsaxlokk market is a large thriving market on the waterfront selling everything from fresh fish to handmade cakes, children's toys and local favourites such as honey, jam, vegetables and wine.

Once you have browsed the glorious market why not make your way to one of the glorious restaurants peppered across the stunning bay for a bite to eat.

At the tip of Delimara Point, next to Marsaxlokk Bay you will find St. Peter's Pool which is undoubtedly a must-visit. Famed for its remarkably clear and deep waters this natural pool has turquoise waters within the striking white limestone rocks along Malta's coastline.

The rocks also create a suitable diving board for the more adventurous types, so if you fancy jumping into the crystal clear waters, it's a spot to remember.

Looking over Marsaxlokk is the 19th century Roman Catholic church, which is dedicated to Our Lady of Pompeii. The church boasts gold, red, and white interiors, with impressive historical statues throughout.
