Westmeath GAA chairman Frank Mescall has issued an impassioned plea to clubs to sell more tickets for the county board’s Win A Home in Spain fundraiser amid growing concerns that it may not break even.
The draw, which is supporting Westmeath GAA’s new Centre of Excellence project in Mullingar, has been postponed by a month to June 30 due to disappointing ticket sales. The county board set a target of selling 15,000 tickets at €100 each for a chance to win a new two-bedroom room home in Murcia as well as a €50,000 cash prize. However, it was revealed at this week’s county board meeting that more than half of the 91 clubs across GAA, camogie and ladies football have yet to sell any.
Online sales have also been poor, prompting Mescall to tell delegates: “I wish I could give you a good report, but it’s going badly. I wish I could say it’s going fantastic, but I can’t. It’s not going well at all.”
Meanwhile, Keith Quinn has been elected as Westmeath’s new county secretary after Brendan Shaw stepped down for health reasons last month. The Killucan clubman has served as assistant / fixtures secretary for the past three years.
