Man Utd news: Surprise Ruben Amorim replacement ‘found’ as £5m clause considered

Manchester United’s season has been an unmitigated disaster. The Red Devils are now guaranteed their worst-ever finish.

And things got even worse over the weekend as they slumped to defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford. It means that United are now staring at the prospect of a bottom-half Premier League finish.

But all is not lost for Ruben Amorim’s side. They are still in the Europa League and potentially just two wins away from booking themselves a spot in next season’s Champions League.

They take on Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in the last four next week and will be very keen on putting together a positive first-leg result. With all of that being said, take a look at all of the standout headlines from Old Trafford:

Richard Keys has suggested that Gareth Southgate could be a good replacement for Ruben Amorim should he be sacked. The Portuguese coach has overseen a rotten run of form in the Premier League.

And Keys believes yet another change of manager could be the solution, with Southgate seen as an ideal successor. He asked on beIN Sports: "The question is, would you trust him now, from what we’ve seen, to rebuild Manchester United with another £250m?"

On Southgate, he added: "On the grounds that he’s taken England to two European Championship finals. He understands a modern player and what’s required in order to make the modern player feel good about himself, his football team and the club he plays for. He’s a master of manipulation and motivation."

Manchester United look set to bid a permanent farewell to Jadon Sancho this summer. The winger joined Chelsea on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy for £25m.

That clause would only be activated should certain conditions be met - and one of those was the Blues finishing above 15th in the Premier League standings. And that is now guaranteed to happen after Chelsea’s win against Fulham over the weekend.

That however does not guarantee that Sancho will become a permanent Chelsea player. The London side can still pay a £5m penalty fee in order to back out of a deal.

Harry Maguire has sent a heartfelt message to United youngster Tyler Fredricson after his club debut. The youngster took to the pitch for the first time during the Red Devils’ defeat to Wolves at Old Trafford.

And despite being on the losing side, Fredricson still left Maguire impressed. Taking to his Instagram story, Maguire wrote: "Congratulations @tyler.fredricson. Brilliant debut, well done mate."

Fredricson could have more opportunities to impress over the closing weeks of the campaign. United take on Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend.
