Joe Canning Backs Up Rogue Call For Tipperary Man To Win Hurler Of The Year

With Tipperary having upset the odds to overcome Cork in yesterday's All-Ireland final, the result has also blown the race for Hurler of Year.
A handful of Cork players had been considered as frontrunners for the award, although it is now assumed that a Tipp player will take home the gong.
The likes of Jake Morris and Jason Forde will be seen as the leading contenders. However, some feel that a more left field selection could end up being the correct one.

Canning Backs Up Call For Tipperary Man To Win Hurler Of The YearRonan Maher produced a wonderful performance in yesterday's final, with some believing that the Tipperary man should now be rewarded with the Hurler of the Year award.
Speaking on Sunday Sport, Joe Canning was among those to back Maher for the gong, explaining why few could argue with his selection:
It's hard to disagree with that.
Before today, Brian Hayes was a shoe-in. The man that shut him down was Ronan Maher...
All the big players, Cahill trusted him to shut them down. Most days he did do it.
He led by example.
A defender winning that award would certainly be a rarity, with the last player to do so being Kilkenny's Tommy Walsh back in 2009.
Canning would also help select a team of the year alongside his fellow Sunday Sport pundits, with Shane McGrath, John Mullane, and Mark Landers the others involved. They would ultimately select seven players from Tipperary, with four from Cork, two from Kilkenny, and one each from Dublin and Galway.

Tipperary will rightly receive a number of individual honours as a result of this All-Ireland triumph, including a likely Hurler of the Year gong.
Should they do so, Ronan Maher would certainly be a fine choice.
