Bryan Mbeumo is convinced that Bruno Fernandes will help him deliver the goals Manchester United crave this season. Mbeumo is getting to know his new team-mates on United’s pre-season tour of the United States after making a £71million move from Brentford and is excited by the prospect of playing with his new captain.

United beat competition from Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea to land Mbeumo in the summer transfer window. The Cameroon international scored 20 goals for Brentford in the Premier League last season and is now tasked with revitalising an ailing attack which managed just 44 goals in 38 league games in 2024/25.

Mbeumo will aim to link up with fellow new arrival Matheus Cunha, while United are hoping to sign a centre-forward to complete their new-look frontline before the window closes. But whoever may be in the pipeline, Mbeumo is delighted to have Fernandes assisting him.

Appearing on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast in the US, he was asked which team-mates he’s most looking forward to playing with. “Of course, Bruno. Of course, yeah,” he replied.

“Yeah, everyone sees it in the past years – he has a really good foot. He can shoot, he can cross, he can do crazy balls. Yeah, for a striker, you just enjoy that.”

Asked how he would develop an understanding with him, Mbeumo added: “I think it's a little bit of everything. As I said, you earn experience from everyone. So it's always good to speak to someone like this.

“But at the end, I think on the pitch, when you're smart like he is, I think you don't even need to think a lot. You just need to make the run and he's going to play you in the right space every time.

“But of course, you can have a little discussion to make him know how I prefer the balls and how I'm feeling the best to have the ball. But at a certain point, there is only one way, even if it's not the one you like, you have to do the run and he's going to put the ball in a good position.”

Ruben Amorim is certain that Fernandes is going to be key to United’s chances in the 2025/26 season. Speaking after their 2-1 win over West Ham on their pre-season tour, he hailed his skipper.

“You can see it in the assists, the goals, but not just that,” he said. “I think now he has more players [around him]. I've felt that on the tour. I feel that now there are more players to help him to lead the group. That is a good thing.

“But he's our leader, so he's really important. Not just on the field, but also off the field. He leads by example. He works really hard, is always available and sometimes he plays with pain.”
