Azure is a cloud paltform from Microsoft, meaning it is the backbone of it's own and many other companies' services and websites.
This software tool being down has meant Microsofts own popular tools, like Powerpoint, Word and Excel, has also been hit.
It also offers companies services like storage, computing and networking, making it essential to run these apps and websites.
