Top Pick BARRISTERS: FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE, CHANNEL 4, 10pmFor people standing in the dock accused of a crime, only one thing stands between freedom and prison - defence barristers. At the frontline of justice, as over a million cases pass through the UK courts every year, these barristers aren’t looking for who is guilty. Their mission is to defend. “We all should empathise with people who are victims of crime, but that doesn’t mean that people who are accused of crimes shouldn’t have a fair trial,” says defence barrister Leon-Nathan Lynch. “There has to be a balance and we’ll fight fearlessly for our clients. Maybe it’s the ultimate underdog fight. Maybe they only have one person on their side.”
With unprecedented access, this compelling series reveals what it takes to keep the scales of justice balanced. From cases of violent assault to international drugs smuggling and murder, the series follows some of the country’s leading barristers as they fight for their clients - while you wonder whether or not they are guilty.
In this first episode, criminal defence barrister Matthew Radstone faces a high-pressure battle to defend a cab driver accused of transporting cocaine worth £1m as part of a multi-national drugs conspiracy. With his client facing a 15-year prison sentence, can Matt convince the jury of his innocence? And Leon-Nathan takes on a complex case of alleged violent carjacking. The driver of a white Mercedes says he was robbed at knifepoint and his car stolen. But his client claims the robbery was staged for the insurance money. With wildly differing stories, how do you defend when the basic truth is unknown?
Best of the rest... SPRINGTIME ON THE FARM, CHANNEL 5, 8pmLast time Helen Skelton filmed the Springtime series, her little girl Elsie, now three, was trying to drink from the lambs’ bottles - so she is prepared for anything. It is indeed the lambing season, so Helen, Jules Hudson, JB Gill and host farmers Rob and Dave Nicholson will all be rolling up their sleeves and mucking in as they expect a deluge of new life.
Stripped across the week, this series follows the action-packed lambing ‘maternity ward’ at Cannon Hall Farm, near Barnsley, which also welcomes goats, miniature donkeys, pigs, alpacas and even a few special guest stars from Yorkshire’s zoos (baby tigers and rhinos, anyone?). Away from the farm, JB also experiences some natural wonders. From ‘bathing’ in the dawn chorus to the healing power of spring tides, he’s bringing some countryside zen to proceedings. Meanwhile the Yorkshire vets get hands on with some considerably more exotic species than they’re used to. It’s the most heartwarming time of the year…
THE GLASS DOME, NETFLIXA Nordic community is scarred by tragedy in this dark and gloomy tale, created by Swedish bestselling crime author Camilla Läckberg. It has an incredibly creepy start as a young girl walks home from after-school club one evening and lets herself in the house. Once inside, she’s grabbed by a masked man, kidnapped and held captive in a glass dome. The girl is banging on the dome, screaming, before the actions cuts to the future.
That little girl, Lejla Ness (Léonie Vincent), is now grown up and an academic in America, conducting research into the minds of predatory child abductors. But a phone call brings her back to the Swedish village where she grew up - the area where she was kidnapped. Now, another young girl has disappeared without a trace. As Lejla investigates the disappearance, she must also confront her own inner darkness. The similarities in the cases could just be a chilling coincidence, but there’s a sense that history is repeating itself.
Caleb decides to keep his enemies close and invites Joe over for lunch. Joe insists to Dawn that she’s still in love with him. Knowing he’s right, Dawn’s left in a quandary. She’s flustered when he continues to convince her to leave Billy and she realises she has a decision to make. Jacob continues to pine after Sarah and is determined to expose Kammy as a cheater. Aaron feels dejected when he has an idea and John doesn’t seem to care.
EASTENDERS, BBC1, 7.30pmSonia reels as a truth comes to light, while Bianca attempts to support her sister. After a chat with Jack, Sonia ponders on a decision that could change her life forever. Priya is full of praise for Avani, but Avani is up to her old tricks and secretly picks up weed from dealer Declan. Jean is incredulous as she tries to find Lily, but she’s nowhere to be found. Zack continues to train Barney as the pair go for a run.
