BBC Call The Midwife series 15 and Christmas special update as fan favourite returns

BBC Call The Midwife series 15 and Christmas special update as fan favourite returns

Call The Midwife fans are in for a treat as the creators have divulged some thrilling news about the forthcoming Christmas special.

The cast and crew are currently on location, filming the much-awaited episode that promises to deliver an exotic twist with scenes set against the vibrant cityscape of Hong Kong.

This year's 14th Christmas special is set to transport viewers to the dynamic streets of Hong Kong, as confirmed by the showrunners.

Behind-the-scenes images from China have been shared, with the caption revealing: "Our team have been out and about in the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong filming all week - and they tell us it's been pretty thrilling!".

The post also highlighted the challenges of shooting in Hong Kong's sub-tropical climate, noting: "Hong Kong weather is sub-tropical, which means that conditions can turn from very hot and humid to rain and thunder in a very short time! Luckily we were prepared for all eventualities - our cast even have their own period-appropriate umbrellas," reports Devon Live.

Adding to the authenticity of the period drama, the production has incorporated rickshaws into the storyline, stating: "Another period-appropriate feature we've been using is the rickshaw - that old stalwart of asian transportation.

"They were ubiquitous in 1970s Hong Kong, so our characters have been using them to get around. Mind you, I'm not sure Shelagh looks entirely comfortable with it. Call the Midwife will return with a new Christmas Special, and Series 15 in 2026."

Fans were ecstatic to see Fenella Woolgar reprising her role as Sister Hilda in the snaps, who has been a fan favourite since her debut in the 2018 Christmas special.

A social media user gushed: "GREAT to have Sister Hilda back. I absolutely LOVE Mrs Buckle's dress And LOOK at the top stitching of Nurse Crane's suit. The deliciousness. Dr Turner, looking very handsome and dapper, as always And I LOVE Fred's outfit."

"You know, I've been watching Call the Midwife since season 4 and I have never noticed until right now: Shelagh reminds me of my teacher in secondary school. I didn't make the connection until I saw her picture just now."

An additional comment read: "Love, love, love this show wonderful to see Sister Hilda back."

Echoing the sentiment, another viewer expressed: "So excited Sister Hilda is back."

Sister Hilda's backstory includes her time with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force during the war and her subsequent nursing career, which equipped her with vast experience upon her arrival at Nonnatus House.

The character made her exit from Call the Midwife in season 11 after the train crash episode, which led to her being sent to the Mother House.

While there, Mother Mildred determined that Nonnatus House could manage without her, prompting Sister Hilda to take up midwifery in Chichester.

Now, Sister Hilda has returned, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what the future holds for her character.
