‘I worked with David Mitchell and he exposed his true colours behind the scenes’

David Mitchell has made his long-awaited sketch comedy return in Channel 4’s all-new Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping. The series also makes way for the funnyman’s iconic reunion with his former Peep Show co-star Robert Webb. They feature alongside other established and rising comedy stars, including Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Lara Ricote, Stevie Martin, and Krystal Evans. The six-part sketch show has never-before-seen spoofs of everyday moments while providing a thrilling throwback for long-time fans of their 2006 series, That Mitchell and Webb Look.
With a group of younger co-stars, Kiell and Krysal made their hilarious debut alongside the comedy icons and opened up about their experience in an exclusive interview with the Daily Express. As well as starring on screen with David Mitchell, the pair also worked with the comedian in the writer’s room, where they brainstormed ideas which eventually became reality. Speaking on his experience, Kiell, who has also presented the Great British Sewing Bee, shared: “It was really fun to peek behind the curtain and see how these things get made.
He continued: “To be able to see behind the scenes was really interesting and a learning experience because they’re pro, they’ve been doing this for a long, long time.”
Kiell also praised their efficiency and added: “To see that whole process in its entirety was a fun experience for me.”
Krystal, an American comedian, told the Daily Express: “I was a bog fan of them before auditioning and booking the role.”
Although she admitted it was initially “overwhelming,” the actress said: “They’re so cool, they made sure everything was in place for the writer’s room and the day-to-day shooting, so it was great working with them. I learned loads and it was very fun.”
Sharing her appreciation for the British audience, Krystal remarked: “I’m grateful for things as they come, and it’s just crazy that such an iconic British comedy duo like Mitchell and Webb would embrace and hire an American.
“I’m very, very grateful for that and for all the viewers.”
Ahead of the Mitchell and Webb Are Not Helping premiere, David and Robert released a joing statement about their return and penned: "When Channel 4 asked us to do another sketch show we were startled, bemused and available.
It’s a perilous time for the industry and so it’s our hope that relaunching the trickiest genre of comedy is a brilliant piece of counter intuitive commissioning…
"We’re confident that unlike Roger Moore with his shoe on the bonnet of a car teetering on the edge of a cliff in For Your Eyes Only [REPLACE WITH 21ST CENTURY REFERENCE?] we’re not about to give British TV comedy a final lethal nudge into the abyss."
