What We Know About FX’s <em>The Marriage Plot</em> So Far

FX is bringing Jeffrey Eugenides’s acclaimed novel The Marriage Plot to TV, with Stranger Things star Sadie Sink attached to lead the project.
The limited series comes from Succession writer Will Arbery and filmmaker Hiro Murai, whose credits include Atlanta and Widow’s Bay. Sink will not only star in the adaptation but also executive produce. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming series so far.
When was The Marriage Plot announced?FX officially greenlit The Marriage Plot as a limited series on June 4.
In a statement announcing the series, FX Entertainment president Gina Balian said, “The Marriage Plot is a perfect fit for FX: ambitious, character-driven storytelling that offers another great opportunity to partner with exceptional artists. We look forward to building on our partnerships with Will and Hiro, both of whom are extraordinary talents who we are proud to work with again.”
What is The Marriage Plot about? The adaptation is based on Jeffrey Eugenides’s bestselling 2011 novel of the same name, which explores love, adulthood, intellectual ambition, and self-discovery through the lives of three recent college graduates.
Speaking about the book shortly after its publication, Eugenides explained that he was interested in examining how classic romantic narratives function in a modern setting.
“The marriage plot doesn’t function anymore as a viable plot for a novelist,” he said in a 2011 interview with The Guardian. “People are still falling in love, getting married, searching for their soulmate, and my heroine here is trying to emancipate herself from these romantic illusions. Unfortunately, as she’s doing that, she’s also falling madly in love with Leonard. So I was just trying to see what energies of the original marriage plot I could still access and how I could violate the tradition as well.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Eugenides discussed one of the novel’s central tensions: the gap between how its protagonist thinks about love and how she experiences it.
“So that was the idea for me, a woman trying to stop being a romantic sap. Be smart...understand that love is a construct. That’s what her head is telling her, obviously her heart is telling her to do something else,” he said.
Who will be in the cast?So far, Sink is the only cast member who has been announced.
The Emmy-nominated actress is best known for playing Max Mayfield on Netflix’s Stranger Things. Her previous credits include The Whale, Fear Street, and The Glass Castle.
FX has not yet revealed which character Sink will play, nor has the network announced the rest of the ensemble.
When will The Marriage Plot premiere? The series does not have a premiere date yet.
