Olivia Rodrigo prefers to let her music do the talking when it comes to her love life—including her relationship status with British actor Louis Partridge—and her album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love’s first track, “Drop Dead,” says a lot.

Rodrigo sings about a romance with a pretty Gemini who, like many Londoners, might’ve “taken that Eurostar [train] to France.”

She told British Vogue that the British capital played a big role in her album. “I’ve found a lot of inspiration from being in London,” she said. “I’ve spent so much time here over the course of making this album. It has a lot of songs that are London vibes, about experiences that I’ve had here.”

Lyrically, Rodrigo dropped some hints that the subject of “drop dead” may be Partridge, starting with her opening lines, “I know that the bar closes at 11 / But I hope you never finish that beer,” which Rodrigo teased ahead of the single’s release alongside a video of her with a Guinness. Partridge starred in Netflix’s House of Guinness, and when it came out, Rodrigo posted Instagram Stories praising his performance.

Olivia Rodrigo’s September 2025 Instagram Story praising Louis Partridge’s House of Guinness performance when it first came out.

That verse continues with a reference to The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” (“You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ / And I know why he wrote them / Now that you’re standin’ right here”), which Rodrigo performed at Glastonbury with the band’s frontman Robert Smith. She and Partridge hard-launched their relationship on Instagram with posts from the festival in July 2025.

In the chorus, she hints that the subject of the song is a celebrity (“Oh, one night I was bored in bed / And stalked you on the internet”). And in the bridge, she expresses her willingness to pursue their romance despite the challenges facing them astrologically (“Pisces and a Gemini / But I think we might go really nice together”). Rodrigo, who was born on February 20, is a Pisces, while Partridge, who was born on June 3, is a Gemini.

ELLE’s resident astrologers, The AstroTwins, wrote of signs’ romantic compatibility, “Pisces is an emotional water sign; Gemini is an intellectual air sign.” Both are also “dualistic by zodiac nature, Gemini being the sign of the Twins and Pisces symbolized by two Fish swimming in opposite directions.”

Rodrigo’s optimism about the romance in the bridge’s final lines (“If you let me stay the night / Well, I think I might just have to stay forever”) echoes her lyrics on the 2024 Guts deluxe track “So American,” which is also believed to be about Partridge. She sings in its chorus, “And he says I’m so American / Oh God, I’m gonna marry him / If he keeps this shit up / I might just be in lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-, lo-lo-lo-lo-lo-love.”

“Drop Dead” seems to add more context to the narrative that “So American” started. Later tracks on the album detail the romance’s rise (“Honeybee” and “U+Me=<3”) and end (breakup tracks “Less” and “Cigarette Smoke”).

As she shared on Instagram when the single dropped, this is just the “first chapter” of the story in the album.

On release day, she added that You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love “is a time capsule of a relationship in all of its highs and lows. It’s my attempt at capturing love from both sides of the coin. The hope and disappointment. The insanity and the clarity. The entanglement and the unraveling.”

“Drop Dead” really is the start of that story. Read its lyrics, via Genius, and watch the music video below:
