Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy’s love story has spanned more than 16 years, though they’ve managed to keep it low-key. After meeting on the set of a film in 2006 and transitioning from co-stars to spouses, they’ve quietly built a close-knit family with three children—all while balancing their respective acting careers. Ahead, see some of the key moments that have helped capture their romance.
The actors first met in 2006 while filming the movie Evening, which was released the following year. Danes later recalled that their relationship was born out of friendship rather than instant romance. “I was very recently single, and I had never been single before, so we were just friends for a while,” she told Marie Claire in 2017. “[Hugh and I] met in Rhode Island when it was at its most audaciously beautiful, in the fall. And there was one day when we were bicycling by the water, and it was sparkly and idyllic, and I just had this dumb epiphany, like, I’m really just happy.”
Speaking with the podcast Armchair Expert in 2024, Danes also remembered how having a one-night stand with a stranger solidified her feelings for Dancy. She recalled thinking of her now-husband, “Oh shit! I think I’m going to marry this person.”
On Feb. 6, 2009, People confirmed that Danes and Dancy got engaged. That year, they were photographed together at a handful of ritzy events, including Vanity Fair’s Oscars after-party in February, a Time 100 gala in May, and the opening night of the County of Kings production at the Public Theater in October.

Two months after Danes’s rep confirmed she was pregnant with the couple’s first child, the actress won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, thanks to her performance in the series Homeland. During her acceptance speech, she gave Dancy a shout-out, saying, “My husband, my love, my life, my baby daddy: This doesn’t mean anything without you. I love you so much, and I’m so grateful. Thank you.”

After only a few rare appearances since welcoming their second child, Danes and Dancy attended more events in 2022. They supported each other’s projects, hitting the red carpet to promote Danes’s series The Essex Serpent in April and Fleishman Is in Trouble in November as well as Dancy’s film Downton Abbey: A New Era in May.

Danes gushed about her 2-year-old daughter, saying, “I love watching toddlers dance, when they jump [and] do the bouncing thing. And Shay, my baby, she’s very in her head and dreamy and sometimes she’ll do this kind of [head-swaying] dance. I’m like, ‘That’s fabulous.’”
“She’s really fun,” Danes added.
Danes also reflected on learning she was pregnant with Shay at age 44, telling Poehler, “I called my OBGYN in convulsive tears. It was all meltdown,” before adding, “None of this was by design. I didn’t know it was physically possible.”
