More than Ikea: Where else to buy furniture in Spain

Recently moved house and looking to furnish your new home in Spain? Here's where to look for furniture beyond the likes of Ikea.

If you move to Spain, it can be very expensive to ship all your furniture over from abroad, so the most likely option is that you’ll buy more when you arrive at your new home. Long term rentals are often not furnished either, so you'll most likely need some items of your own.

Surprisingly, furniture shopping can be quite difficult in Spain. This is because you generally won’t find as many good quality options as you may be used to back in your home country.

There also aren’t a good range of second-hand furniture stores. Those that do exist are generally leaning towards the vintage side and items can be much more expensive than buying them new.

If you know you’re only going to be in Spain for a few years and aren’t worried about finding quality furniture that will last, the likes of Swedish flatpack furniture brand Ikea will do, but if you’re looking for quality, durable options with a bit more design flair, then where do you look?

Maisons du Monde

French-owned furniture store Maisons du Monde is one if the best options, if you’re looking for solid, non-flatpack furniture in a range of different designs. They offer vintage, exotic, classic chic, seaside, modern, country, and industrial styles for whatever type of look you’re going for. While they do have physical stores in many of Spain’s big cities, they don’t always have all the big products in stock, so if you’re looking to try out a bed or a sofa, you’ll usually just have to go buy online reviews. Be aware that not all products on their website are sold by Maisons du Monde themselves and different providers offer different quality. Look for the Maisons du Monde brand to ensure the best quality.

Kave Home

Kave Home is a company based in Catalonia, but have stores in many major Spanish cities, as well as in France. The designs are generally high quality and have a higher price tag too, but you can get some good bargains sometimes. The style is generally Mediterranean with a touch of Nordic design and mostly solid wood products. They sell everything from sofas and chairs to dining tables, beds, lighting and home decor.

The quality is medium – better or on par with some Ikea options, along with low price tags to match. The style is typically plain and simple. You won’t find most of the furniture in store, however so will have to rely on online photos and reviews.

Casa Viva

Casa Viva has stores all over Spain and generally offers good quality options in a range of different designs from sofas and dining tables to desks and shelves. The prices are mid-range, but as they often have sales on you can grab a good bargain from here. It’s important to be aware though that many of the Casa Viva stores are small and just sell items such as plates, bowls, vases and decoration. Only the bigger ones have larger pieces of furniture, as well as their online store.

Smaller local furniture stores

The furniture stores listed above may offer good choices and have websites that you can easily browse for products, but don't underestimate the possibility of finding what you need from small local tiendas de muebles (furniture stores).

Many cities in Spain will have furniture warehouses on the outskirts, so it's worth googling them. Keep in mind as well that you will probably have more negotiating power when asking for a descuento (discount) from these local suppliers, unlike in the official stores with fixed prices.
