Morrisons is to begin shutting more than a dozen supermarkets across the UK in a matter of days to "reinvigorate" the company, the retailer confirmed. The supermarket has announced the exact dates they will be closing 17 of its stores in a major shake up of.

Several locations will close as soon as next week, a total of 16 locations will shut on April 16, with one store remaining open until May 16 before it closes. Morrisons confirmed last month it would be closing 17 of its smaller Daily-branded convenience stores, as well as several cafes, Market Kitchens, florists, meat counters, fish counters, and pharmacies putting around 365 jobs at risk of redundancy.

Among the locations confirmed to be closing were 11 with Post Office counters inside. These are also likely to shut, but not necessarily on the same dates as their respective stores. In a statement to The Sun, the Post Office confirmed when its stores in these locations would shut.

It said: "Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices. We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between April 9 and May 14.

"We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies."

Post Office branches confirmed to be closing are below:

  • Pheasey Post Office, Birmingham - April 9
  • Fellside Post Office, Whickham - April 9
  • Waterloo Estate Post Office, Poole - April 10
  • Shenfield Broadway Post Office, Brentwood - April 13
  • Moorfields Post Office, Bath - April 13

  • Crossways Post Office, Croydon - April 15

Morrisons claims rising operational costs are a key factor behind the closures, with Chief Executive Rami Baitiéh explaining in a statement that the affected outlets and services have become more costly to operate than the revenue they generate.

Rami added: “Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall scale of the Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues.

“We will of course take particular care to look after all of them well through the coming changes.”

The supermarket chain employs 95,000 people alongside its 1600 Morrisons Dailys and 500 supermarkets.
