Sky enthusiasts gathered in Bilecik for a dark observation event

A "Dark sky observation" event was held in Harmankaya Canyon Nature Park in cooperation with Bilecik Governorship, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, TÜBİTAK , Turkish Space Agency , Bursa Eskişehir Bilecik Development Agency (BEBKA) and Yenipazar Municipality.
Speaking at the event, Bilecik Governor Faik Oktay Sözer said they were determined to preserve the natural beauty and values of the city in the best way possible and pass them on to future generations.
Sözer emphasized that the Yenipazar district has a rare potential in Türkiye with its low population and location away from light pollution, and noted:
The process we've initiated to have Harmankaya Canyon Nature Park internationally recognized as a 'Dark Sky Park' is the most significant demonstration of our commitment in this area. We are meticulously managing every stage of this process, from scientific measurements to international applications. Today's event is a valuable step not only to gaze at the sky but also to integrate with nature, to unite science and culture, and to open new horizons for everyone, from children to young people. Throughout the three days of workshops, observations, and walks, we will all experience the riches that the sky and nature offer us.

"WE ARE ALSO IN ASTRONOMY TOURISM"
Yenipazar Mayor İlhan Özden also provided information about Harmankaya Canyon, saying, "The canyon's exceptional suitability for canyoning, trekking, camping, and caravanning provides a significant advantage for the district. We may be a small district, but with this year's first event, we've declared our presence in astronomy tourism. I hope you enjoy the astrophotography workshops, telescope planet observations, and expert presentations included in our event, and that you leave with fond memories."
"WE APPLIED FOR REGISTRATION TO BECOME AN INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY PARK"
BEBKA Secretary General Sabri Bayram stated that the event is not just about watching the sky with telescopes, but also provides a powerful learning environment that nurtures young people's imagination, encourages their curiosity, and brings science to all segments of society.
Bayram pointed out that Harmankaya has a very suitable environment for sky observation and said:
"Initially, we had light pollution measurements conducted here and certified that it was an area with very little light pollution by international standards. We also applied for registration as an 'International Dark Sky Park.' The calendar we chose was also very important because we chose a time when there were clear skies and asteroid showers. It's one of the most beautiful times of the year. It's a magnificent geography. We welcome both sky enthusiasts and nature lovers to Harmankaya Nature Park."
Astroder and Kozmik Anafor member Hilal Fidan said Harmankaya was "a place free" from light pollution and that the region had a magnificent sky.
Scientists and sky enthusiasts from various provinces of Türkiye will participate in three-day events, including planetary and deep space observations with telescopes, ISS connectivity with a radio telescope, construction of a celestial atlas using a sundial, and nature walks. Scientists will also give presentations in astronomy workshops.
