Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's Statement on Visa Issues

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made statements regarding the visa liberalization process with Europe and the decision to ease visas for the Schengen area. Commenting on current events during a television program, Fidan emphasized the critical role visa liberalization plays in Turkey-EU relations.
Commenting on the positive developments from some countries regarding Schengen visa applications, Fidan said, "There have been opposition decisions made by several countries. Intense diplomacy has been carried out on this issue. It was a very serious effort. As a result, this decision was made."
Fidan emphasized the strategic importance of steps to be taken with Europe regarding visa liberalization, not only for freedom of travel but also for preserving and developing Türkiye's long-term relationship with the European Union. "The steps to be taken with Europe regarding visa liberalization are important. This issue is crucial for keeping Türkiye's EU perspective alive," Fidan said, adding that Ankara will continue its diplomatic contacts in this direction.
Turkey has been working on visa liberalization with the European Union since 2013. However, the process has been slow due to the incomplete technical criteria and political obstacles. The recent increase in Schengen visa applications and rising rejection rates have sparked significant public criticism in Türkiye. Minister Fidan's statements indicate that expectations on this issue are once again on the agenda.
