New feature from TikTok: Will make you meditate from the app! Will this new move reduce young people's screen time?

TikTok , one of the world’s most popular social media platforms, has taken an innovative step to reduce the time its young users spend in front of screens. The app, which has long been criticized for harming young people, has developed a new sleep feature in response to this criticism. This feature aims to support sleep patterns by encouraging users to meditate at night. TikTok’s move aims to both protect young people’s mental health and increase the platform’s sense of responsibility.
The sleep feature, which is available to all TikTok users as of this week, will be active by default, especially for young people under the age of 18. Users over the age of 18 will be able to turn the feature on optionally. However, young users can manually turn this setting off if they wish. The feature offers full-screen meditation exercises to users who scroll through the app after 10 p.m.
Users are greeted with a message that tells them it’s bedtime, and are then guided through breathing exercises for a comfortable sleep. The app tries to calm the user with instructions like “Clear your head, breathe, hold and release.” These meditation sessions aim to help young people move away from screens and into a healthier sleep pattern.
According to the screenshots, meditation exercises can be easily disabled by users. Even users under the age of 18 can continue to use the app normally by using the “Return to For You” option at the bottom. TikTok claims that 98% of young people left the feature on during the testing period. While this shows that the feature is accepted by young people, it is not yet known how effective it will be in real use. While the flexible structure of the feature allows users to make free choices, it is a matter of curiosity whether young people will prefer meditation.
