Initial Work Begins on Melbourne Airport's Third Runway

Melbourne Airport has entered a new phase of its long-awaited third runway project. As initial construction begins, the project will include improvements to road infrastructure and a dedicated plan for communities affected by noise.
The new runway is expected to open in 2031. Upon completion, the project is expected to create 37,000 new jobs by 2046, increase tourism activity, offer more travel options for passengers, and strengthen the export capacity of Victorian manufacturers.
Initial preparatory work begins this month. Starting in late September, improvements will be made to Sunbury Road to improve traffic flow and safety. The road will include widening the area between Wildwood Road and Oaklands Road, installing temporary intersections and traffic lights. The work is expected to take approximately 12 months.
In parallel, a community engagement process has been launched with residents in the Hume and Brimbank areas for the Third Runway Noise Improvement Plan. The plan aims to reduce noise impacts through building improvements such as roof insulation, double-glazed windows, and improved door seals. Updated noise forecasts in 2026 will determine which properties qualify for the support program.
Local people are invited to participate in the process and shape the project.
