Google revealed how much energy a query on Gemini consumes

While the high energy consumption of AI tools is causing concern, Google has released a statement. Google's Gemini AI tool reportedly consumes less energy per query. One query reportedly consumes the same amount of energy as a microwave oven runs for one second.

According to MIT Technology Review, Google has published a detailed report on Gemini's energy consumption.

Here, the company says, an average text query on Gemini uses 0.24 Wh of electricity—about the same amount as a microwave oven running for one second. It also releases 0.03 grams of carbon dioxide and uses 0.26 milliliters of water—the equivalent of about five drops.

According to Jeff Dean, who has been at Google since 2018, the report considers not only the operation of custom TPU processors but also other infrastructure. Approximately 25 percent of the energy is consumed by the host machines' CPU and memory, 10 percent by backup systems, and 8 percent by cooling and other data center costs.

The company also stated that Gemini's efficiency increased throughout the year.
