Trap for democratic demands: Execution of rights and freedoms

Trap for democratic demands: Execution of rights and freedoms

The 10th Judiciary Package of the AKP , consisting of 30 articles and submitted to the Presidency of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, has been a source of disappointment. The regulations included in the package, which did not meet the expectations of the public and increased the pressure elements against the opposition, drew reactions. The proposal, which foresees a sentence reduction for those in prison due to crimes committed before July 31, 2023, does not include the “Covid regulation”, and also sees the path to prison for those who commit crimes described as “non-criminal offenses”.

Gül Çiftci, CHP Deputy Chair Responsible for Elections and Party Legal Affairs, spoke to BirGün about the regulations included in the 10th Judiciary Package. Çiftci summarized the proposal as “a bill proposal that has nothing to do with the expectations that the AKP has created in society.”

“FREEDOM WILL BE RESTRICTIONED”

Underlining that the execution regulation submitted by the AKP to the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey does not meet social expectations, CHP's Çiftci underlined that rights and freedoms will be further restricted with the regulation.

Çiftci stated that the proposal did not provide a solution for sick prisoners as promised, and continued his words as follows:

“This proposal, which disregards the decisions of the Constitutional Court and criminalizes democratic actions, is no longer an enforcement regulation; citizens who exercise their democratic rights are targeted. New penal provisions are being created for those who attend rallies, chant slogans and carry symbols. This regulation targets farmers, workers, students and the opposition. This proposal is not a ‘holiday gift’ but a trap package prepared against the democratic demands of the people.”
