Here’s Your Guide to Every Character on Dutton Ranch

When Yellowstone ended, fans already assumed that it wasn’t a real goodbye. Rumors swirled about a potential season 6 and then Paramount eventually announced two spinoffs: Marshals and Dutton Ranch. So, when the Luke Grimes-led task force series debuted featuring the youngest Dutton sibling and characters from the Broken Rock Reservation, fans wondered which Yellowstone characters would return to join Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) on their own adventure in Dutton Ranch.
Instead, Dutton Ranch debuted on Friday, May 15, with an entirely new supporting cast. Sure, Beth and Rip’s adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), followed them from Montana to South Texas. But it seems that every other member of the Yellowstone Ranch bunkhouse moved on. Dutton Ranch certainly isn’t hurting for talent, though. Annette Bening and Ed Harris join up in Texas, alongside stars from Ozark, Suicide Squad, and Narcos.
To help break down who’s who in the new cast of Dutton Ranch, follow along below.

Allow me to reintroduce you to our returning heroes. Beth Dutton is the only daughter of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the late patriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch. Her brother is Kayce (Grimes) on Marshals, and hopefully they’ll meet up again for a crossover sometime in the future. Her husband Rip, on the other hand, was a ranch hand that John took in from a young age and basically raised him like he was a son. After Kayce sold the Yellowstone Ranch in the Yellowstone season 5 finale, the couple moved on to start their own ranch in Montana. Now, thanks to a wildfire, they find themselves starting over once again in South Texas.

Beth and Rip basically adopted Carter back in Yellowstone season 4 after his father died. The couple saw parallels of themselves in the young boy, and Rip gave him a place to live in exchange for working on the ranch. It remains unknown if Carter took on the Dutton last name, officially, or if he has any last name at all. But even though Beth and Rip can’t have children of their own, they treat Carter as their son.

Though many fans expected Ed Harris to play the villain in Dutton Ranch, he plays a much calmer, older figure in Rio Paloma, Texas instead. Everett is a Navy veteran and a veterinarian, who helps Beth save a horse following a car wreck in the Dutton Ranch premiere. We’ll see what else the character gets up to as the show goes on. But for now, he seems like a good ally for the Duttons as they sort out living in a new place with other not-so-welcoming foes.

Five-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening plays the main villain of the series, named Beulah Jackson. She runs a neighboring ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas, that seems to do awful well raising and slaughtering cattle. Still, she attempts to extort Beth in episode 1 instead of giving her a fair deal, so I imagine there’s something darker behind the Jackson’s immense wealth. She runs the business alongside her two sons, Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) and Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), who couldn’t be more opposites of each other.

Rob-Will kicks off the premiere by murdering one of his fellow ranch hands and hiding the body. So, it doesn’t take much to figure out that Beulah Jackson’s son is a bit of a problem. He’s a loose cannon, and I can’t imagine it’ll be long before his brief encounter with Rip in episode 1 morphs into a full-on fist fight. Before Dutton Ranch, Jai Courtney starred as Kyle Reese in Terminator Genisys (2015) and Captain Boomerang in both Suicide Squad (2016) and The Suicide Squad (2021).

Best known for his role as Pablo Escobar’s cousin Gustavo on Netflix’s Narcos, Juan Pablo Raba joins Dutton Ranch as Beulah’s other son, Joaquin. There’s no confirmation yet on who his and Rob-Will’s father is—or if it’s even the same man—let alone if they’re actually Beulah’s children by blood. But so far, Beulah refers to them both as her sons. Unlike Rob-Will, Joaquin is very put together. He helps run the ranch and clean up its messes—starting with his brother.

After moving to Texas, Rip hirs Azul as his sole ranch hand. His family has lived in the area for generations, and he knows practically everyone in town. We don’t know much about his backstory just yet but seems to know his way around working the ranch. In the premiere, he steps on a rattlesnake and kills it with his boot.

After Everett (Harris) tells off bull rider Hoyt (Kyle James) at the bar in episode 1, Carter (Little) jumps in to save a woman named Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind) from the rodeo man’s unwanted advances. Later, she bails Carter out from jail and takes a liking to him. Hopefully, it doesn’t place Carter in harm’s way once again—though it probably will.

Chet is a cowboy working on the Jackson ranch. He accompanied Rob-Will when he murdered one of his fellow bunkmates, and now he’s harboring a secret against the Jackson family. He’ll need to decide as the season goes on just how far he’s willing to go to protect Rob-Will—or if Rob-Will’s even worth protecting at all.
