Sunscreen should be used continuously in summer and winter: Critical warnings from experts

As the summer months begin to take effect, the importance of using sunscreen has also increased. Experts emphasize that care should be taken when choosing sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful sunlight.
Cumhuriyet spoke with Dr. Ayşenur Botsalı, Executive Board Member of the Turkish Dermatology Association Microscopy Working Group, about the importance of using sunscreen and the points to be considered.
Botsalı, who pointed out that sunlight is one of the main factors underlying the vast majority of skin cancers, said, “UVB rays directly cause breaks in the DNA chain. When this damage cannot be repaired, it can cause mutations and, over time, cancer. In addition to cancer treatment, the most important recommendation we give to patients diagnosed with skin cancer is to effectively protect them from the sun and continue to use sunscreen throughout the year.”
Botsalı, who emphasized that sunscreen should be used regularly not only in the summer but also in every season, said, “Sunscreen should be used throughout the year for areas that are exposed in both summer and winter, such as the face and hands. It is known that ultraviolet A rays are not related to air temperature but to the intensity of light, and that they continue to have an effect on the skin even on cloudy, cool or winter days. In addition, ultraviolet A rays can filter through windows. This means that our skin can continue to be damaged even in the office, at home or while driving. Sun protection should not be seasonal, but a part of daily skin care.”
'IT MAY CAUSE RASHES' Stating that when sunscreen is not selected correctly or applied incorrectly, it does not provide sufficient protection on the skin and also causes various dermatological problems, Botsalı said, “Even if used regularly, sunscreens will not be effective if insufficient amounts are applied. Chemicals found in some products, especially perfumes or some filters, can cause spots and itchy rashes as a result of interaction with the sun.” PAY ATTENTION TO THESE WHEN CHOOSING A PRODUCT- In addition to the SPF information on the box, a statement regarding UVA protective activity should also be sought.
- The texture of the sunscreen is important. For this reason, sunscreens that are suitable for your skin type should be preferred, especially when choosing a sunscreen for your face. It is useful for individuals with oily skin to look for the phrase "noncomedogenic" on the sunscreen label.
- The product used must be resistant to water and sweat. Contact with water may reduce the effectiveness of the product. Therefore, sunscreens should be applied 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 2-3 hours.
- Clinically tested and approved products of reliable dermocosmetic brands should be preferred.
