He learned he had cancer abroad... He saved his kidney in Türkiye: "I overcame the fear of losing my kidney in my country"
Çiğdem Eken, who said that when she applied to the hospital in Dubai with complaints of pain, both kidney stones and a 4.5-centimeter mass were detected, stated that she was diagnosed with kidney cancer . Eken, who stated that she did not want to have the surgery there, said, "When I returned to Turkey, I went to different hospitals; however, the doctors said that there was a high probability that my kidney would be removed during the surgery. I never wanted my kidney to be removed. Due to factors such as the hospital order, physical conditions, and lack of information, I was psychologically worn out, and my fear of losing my kidney increased even more. Finally, I heard about my doctor Serdar Bey and applied to him."
Eken, 61, whose kidney mass was removed without any damage using a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy method, was discharged on the second day following the operation.
Urology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serdar Yalçın provided information about the health status of Eken, whose treatment he undertook. Noting that the patient had serious adhesions in the abdomen due to a previous intestinal surgery, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın said, "It was a difficult case. We performed this surgery with the closed method we call laparoscopic. We managed to remove only the mass on the kidney with the camera by entering the abdomen with only a few 4-5 mm small skin incisions. The remaining kidney tissue is almost normal in size and can maintain all its features. With the method we call 'renal ischemia', where the renal vein is temporarily closed for only 15 minutes and the kidney blood flow is cut off, we both got rid of the mass and kept the kidney actively working."
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın stated that during the surgery, healthy kidney tissue was also evaluated with the pathology method called "Frozen" and said that the experience of the team performing the surgery also played an important role in the success of the process.

Prof. Dr. Yalçın said, "The surgical approach aimed at surgically removing the tumor is at the top of the treatment protocol. Especially in small tumors, 'partial nephrectomy', where the kidney is preserved and only the tumor is removed, is considered the gold standard. This procedure can be performed with laparoscopic or robotic methods. In larger tumors, the surgery is shaped according to its location; if the tumor is located in the central region with intense vascularization, the entire kidney can be removed. However, if the tumor is located in an area close to the edges of the kidney, the kidney can be protected with partial nephrectomy."
"The primary function of the kidneys is to filter waste products and excess fluid from the blood and excrete them through urine, thus maintaining the body's fluid, electrolyte, mineral and acid-base balance; and also contributing to the regulation of blood pressure, commonly known as 'tension'," said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın, adding, "Kidney cancer occurs when cells that maintain their normal function lose their shape and function and grow uncontrollably."
Noting that there has been an increase in kidney tumors, which constitute approximately 4 percent of all cancers, in recent years, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yalçın stated that successful results can be achieved by catching these cancers in the early stages and performing surgical treatments. Yalçın explained that treatment is planned according to the stage of the disease, the location of the tumor in the kidney, its size, degree and whether it has spread to other organs.
