Expert advice for families about opening schools: 'The adaptation process is very important'

The end of summer vacation and the start of school can create mixed emotions for both students and families. To ensure a smooth transition into the new school year, experts emphasize the importance of preparing children emotionally and mentally for school.
Speaking to Cumhuriyet, Dr. Pelinsu Bulut Özer, a faculty member at Istanbul Bilgi University's Department of Psychology, stated that families should open a space for dialogue to ease their child's transition to school during this period. She said, "It's important to understand the child's feelings about starting school, evaluate the past, establish common goals for the new term, and emphasize that school isn't just about classes."
Özer emphasized that the adaptation period for children starting school for the first time is a crucial time for both children and parents, saying, "The facilitating role of parents should not be forgotten to ensure your child has a more positive start to school life. Before school starts, explore the school with your child from the outside, and if possible, visit the inside and meet the teachers. Emphasize the positive aspects of school, explaining that it's a place to play, make new friends, and learn new things."
