Critical warning from expert: 'Sacrifice meat should be consumed after resting for 24 hours'
Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Erdal Gündoğan gave advice on what to consider when consuming fresh meat before Eid al-Adha. 'MEAT SHOULD BE RESTED FOR 24 HOURS'

Warning that fresh meat consumption may cause digestive system disorders in the early stages, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan said, “These digestive disorders include constipation, abdominal pain and reflux attacks, gas, bloating and indigestion. The reason for this is that the muscles in fresh meat have not yet relaxed. Meat should not be consumed immediately after it is cut, and it should be rested in a cool environment for at least 24 hours to allow the muscles in the meat to relax.”

'HYGIENE RULES MUST BE FOLLOWED'

Specialist Dr. Gündoğan said, “Cleanliness should be taken into consideration during the cutting, storage and cooking processes of meat, and it is extremely important to follow hygiene rules at these stages. Hands should be washed, especially after contact with raw meat.”

'EXCESS MEAT CONSUMPTION CAN CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS'

Warning about excessive meat consumption, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan said, “Excessive meat consumption over a long period of time can cause high cholesterol, gout attacks, and liver and kidney diseases in the long term.”

'IT SHOULD BE PREPARED BY BOILING AND GRILLING'

Saying that the way meat is cooked is also important, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan advised, “Meat should be consumed boiled. Healthy cooking methods such as oven or grill should be used. Oily cooking methods such as roasting or frying should be avoided. Balance should be achieved by using salad, vegetables or whole grain products along with meat. It should be consumed in a portion of 100-150 grams that is appropriate for daily needs.”

'DIABETES, HYPERTENSION AND HEART PATIENTS SHOULD BE CAREFUL'

Indicating that in addition to meat consumption during the holiday, irregular meals until late hours, and increased consumption of sweets and sugar can pose risks in terms of health problems, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan said, “The unbalanced and unhealthy diet model implemented during the holiday days carries risks in terms of metabolic diseases. It can cause blood sugar fluctuations in diabetic patients, disrupting blood sugar balance and causing excessive increases in blood sugar. Sugary foods and salty meat products can cause increases in blood pressure in hypertension patients. Heavy and irregular nutrition in reflux and gastritis patients can cause an increase in complaints related to these diseases. Excessive fatty nutrition in heart diseases can lead to rhythm problems and increase the risk of heart attack. In gout patients, especially red meat and offal consumption can increase the risk of gout attacks. In obese patients, the increase in calorie intake can further disrupt metabolic balances.”

Specialist Dr. Gündoğan listed the patient groups that need to pay attention to proper and balanced nutrition during the holiday as diabetic patients, hypertension patients, those with heart disease, those with stomach and intestinal disorders and elderly patients.

Drawing attention to the things that these patients should pay attention to during the holiday, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan made the following recommendations:

“These patients should stay away from sweet and sugary foods; they should prefer milk desserts instead of syrupy desserts. It is important to increase their water consumption and drink plenty of water. Meat consumption should be limited, preferably low-fat and well-cooked meats should be consumed. These patients should not skip their medications during the holiday.”

'LIGHT EXERCISES SHOULD BE DONE'

Stating that one should not consume large amounts of food and stay up late during the holiday, Specialist Dr. Gündoğan recommended light exercises such as walking during the day.
