Beware of rosacea! It causes permanent vascular problems.

Yilmaz, who is also a faculty member in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine, said that the prevalence of rosacea in the world is 21 percent.

Yılmaz, noting that this condition is more common in women and those with fair skin, said, "Patients complain of warmth, a burning sensation, redness, and sometimes acne on their face. This is often mistaken for allergies or sun sensitivity. They say they experience these symptoms when they get sunburned. They assume it's the cleansing products I use. This is why rosacea often gets diagnosed late. The earlier a diagnosis is made, the more precautions we take, and the more patients take precautions, the more we can prevent the disease from worsening. Therefore, it shouldn't be neglected."

Yılmaz emphasized that while they usually expect the disease to occur in people in their 30s, they have also seen cases in people in their 20s in recent years, noting that cases peak in people in their 40s and 50s.

Yilmaz explained that people's faces become red when the blood vessels in the face dilate, which is where the disease gets its name. He continued: "The redness that occurs on the face causes complaints in the patient. It occurs in attacks. Initially, these attacks are temporary. This redness, triggered by heat, stress, fatigue, and sun, can become permanent over time if left untreated. When you inflate a balloon, it returns to its original shape when it releases the initial air, but if it remains inflated for a long time, the balloon shrinks when it releases the air. The same thing happens to the veins in rosacea. The biggest fear in rosacea is that temporary blood vessel dilation becomes permanent. Permanent redness is something we never want."

Yılmaz stated that they inform the person about the disease before treatment and that, as an association, they also try to raise awareness by printing brochures.

"I'LL GET LASER AND GET OUT OF IT, THAT SENTENCE IS VERY WRONG"

Explaining what rosacea patients should be careful about, Yilmaz said, "Strict protection from the sun is not enough for rosacea patients. They should protect themselves from the heat of opening ovens or pots, avoid consuming tea, coffee, and very hot food, and avoid hot and spicy foods. Alcohol also triggers vasodilation."

Yilmaz emphasized that in rosacea, inflamed yellowish pimples develop as a result of parasites and bacteria adding to the redness, causing acne rosacea.

Yılmaz, who warned that patients should be as careful as they are with the treatments, said: "If the enlargement of the veins has become persistent despite creams and oral medications, we need laser treatments. The need for laser treatment indicates two negative consequences. If there is enlargement of the capillaries, laser treatment is not the solution. Laser treatment only focuses on repairing existing damage. After the procedure, the patient must continue to strictly protect themselves from the sun and heat. The idea of 'I won't do anything, I won't bother, I'll just get laser treatment,' is a mistake. The key is protection."
