'Take necessary precautions against sun to protect yourself from skin cancer'

Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Yakup Çil made important statements regarding skin cancers. Prof. Dr. Çil stated that skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in humans, saying, "The skin is the largest organ in our body. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma are the most common skin cancers. Among these, malignant melanoma is the most dangerous. This type spreads most quickly to other organs and is often distinguishable by its dark color."
MOLE FOLLOWING IS VITALProf. Dr. Çil emphasized that moles, which are found on everyone, are mostly harmless, and warned, "However, if there are sudden changes in moles such as rapid growth, color change, distortion of the borders, or bleeding, the possibility of skin cancer should be considered and a specialist should be consulted."
SUNLIGHT IS THE MAJOR RISK FACTORProfessor Dr. Çil emphasized that sun exposure is one of the most significant causes of skin cancer, saying, "It's more common in areas exposed to the sun, especially the face and hands. Hats, glasses, and sunscreen should be worn on sunny days. These products should be used regularly not only in the summer months, but also in winter and on cloudy days."
BE CAREFUL WITH CHEMICALS AND BURNSÇil also noted that long-term exposure to chemicals and childhood burns can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. He noted that squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is particularly prevalent in areas with burn scars.
DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT PROCESSProf. Dr. Çil stated that when skin cancer is suspected, a sample of the suspicious tissue should be taken for pathological examination. "If a diagnosis is made," he said, "the extent of the cancer spread should be determined. The cancerous tissue is surgically removed, and radiotherapy or medical treatments are also added when necessary."
HEAD AND NECK REGION IS AT RISKProf. Dr. Çil stated that the head and neck areas, which are most exposed to the sun, are at risk, emphasizing that surgical interventions in these areas should be performed by specialist physicians for aesthetic results. He also stated that protecting the areas from the sun after surgery positively impacts recovery.
EARLY DIAGNOSIS SAVES LIVESFinally, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, Prof. Dr. Yakup Çil said, "Early diagnosis both prolongs life and enables treatment with smaller, aesthetically pleasing scars. We shouldn't ignore skin cancer if we notice suspicious changes on our skin. Early diagnosis, as with all types of cancer, is lifesaving."
