Meteorologist Adil Tek: Temperatures in Istanbul rise to 35 degrees during the holiday

With the arrival of June, there has been a noticeable increase in air temperatures. Kandilli Observatory Meteorology Laboratory Engineer Adil Tek evaluated the meteorological conditions and made statements about the expected weather conditions during the holiday. Tek said, "There is clear and warm weather in Istanbul during the holiday. Air temperatures continue to increase in Istanbul during the holiday. Temperature values ​​reach approximately 30 degrees. In some places, temperature values ​​seem to rise to 35 degrees in the inner regions where wind circulation is low, but from where we are, it seems that the highest temperatures in the coastal areas will be around 25-26 degrees. The situation that Istanbulites suffer the most is that the night temperatures are low and the winds blowing from the north have also reduced the temperatures felt at night. While night temperatures were around 14 degrees in the past weeks, the night temperatures will rise to 18 degrees during the holiday. In fact, we can easily say that summer has come to Istanbul during the holiday. It seems that we will start to experience the temperatures felt in summer during the holiday."

'TEMPERATURES ARE REACHING UP TO 35 DEGREES'

Tek, who stated that the temperatures are increasing, said, “The highest temperatures for Istanbul are up to 35 degrees. These temperature values ​​​​are valid in the inner parts. As we said, in the coastal areas, it is 26 degrees. There is no rain in Istanbul, no precipitation. We will see a lot of sun. The coastal areas seem to be a little more relaxing. We will feel the heat a little more in the inner parts. We can even say that we will be overwhelmed by these temperature values.”

'THERE ARE GRADUATELY INCREASING TEMPERATURE VALUES DURING THE HOLIDAY'

Tek said, "There are actually increasing temperatures during the holiday. First of all, the temperature increases a little more on the third day of the holiday. While the temperature is around 28 degrees to 30 degrees on the first day, it goes up to 32-33 degrees on the second day and even 34-35 degrees on the third day. The temperature will be above 30 degrees again on the fourth day of the holiday. It seems to be for Istanbul."

'THERE ARE 3-4 LESS HEAT WAVES COMPARED TO SUMMER 2024'

Tek, who stated that I experienced hotter weather, said, “We have started to experience increasingly hotter weather due to global climate change. We saw 3-4 heat waves in 2023. We saw about 5 heat waves in 2024. But the 5 heat waves were long-lasting. Some lasted 10 days, some lasted a week, some lasted 2-3 days. 2024 was already the hottest year globally. Our country was also affected by this temperature globally. The highest values ​​measured so far were measured in our country in 2024, and we had a very hot summer. But when we look at the summer of 2025, there are 3-4 heat waves, which are comparatively fewer than the summer of 2024. It indicates that we will be exposed to slightly more heat waves compared to 2023. We say these according to the results of our climate models.”

WE WILL SEE HEAT WAVES IN JULY AND AUGUST

Adil Tek said, “We can also evaluate these heat waves month by month. For example, we do not expect very hot weather in June during the summer months. June is a little more around seasonal norms. Although it may exceed from time to time, it seems to be generally above seasonal norms. However, in July and August, the increase in anometers, namely deviations, temperatures starts to increase a little more. According to our current climate forecasts, we will see heat waves mostly in July and August. It seems that this will be a little less compared to 2024 and a little more compared to 2023. Of course, although the sweltering weather will not be very effective in the inland parts of the country, the heat waves will increase the temperature a lot. However, we will see sweltering weather much more in coastal areas, especially in Marmara and Istanbul, along with the Marmara, Aegean coasts or the Mediterranean coasts. We cannot say this only for this summer. We will see heat waves more frequently in the following period. Later, it seems that the number of heat waves will increase gradually in the summers of 2026, 2027 and 2028.

'THE WEATHER IS HOT DURING THE HOLIDAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY'

Tek, who also evaluated the holiday nationwide, said, “If we evaluate the holiday on a country basis, we can say that the first day of the holiday is generally rainless throughout the country, but only in the Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolian regions, there is rain in the afternoon hours of the first day of the holiday. Again, there is rain in the afternoon hours in the same places on the second day. On the third and fourth days, there is no rain at all throughout the country. There is completely clear, warm weather for the western regions. Temperatures exceed seasonal norms. There are 30-35 degrees in the Mediterranean, 34 degrees in the inland areas and above 36 degrees, especially in the Aegean region around Aydın. In other words, the weather is hot throughout the country during the holiday.”

Tek, who talked about sea water temperatures, said, “By the way, I want to talk about sea water temperatures. Especially the Mediterranean sea water temperatures have now exceeded 20 degrees. The Mediterranean has a temperature between 22 and 25 degrees. The temperatures in the Aegean vary between 20-22 degrees. In Marmara, the sea water temperatures are between 18 and 20 degrees. Now the sea water temperatures are at a level where you can swim in the sea. In the Black Sea, there is a slightly cooler sea water temperature. There are sea water temperatures ranging between 16 and 18 degrees. For those who will go on this holiday, for those who want to go to the seaside and cool off, the Mediterranean is very suitable. The Aegean is at a level where you can swim, we can say that the Marmara and the Black Sea are a bit cooler, but you can still swim in the sea. There is no rain during the holiday, the roads are smooth. In other words, the asphalt may soften a little due to the high temperature. Therefore, those who will set off on the road, those who will travel, should take this temperature into consideration and not speed too much to prevent the tires of their vehicles from slipping.
