Fahrettin Altun: Türkiye has become the key to peace and justice

A panel titled "Turkey and NATO in the Face of Transforming Security and Information-Based Challenges" was organized by the Presidency's Directorate of Communications in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, prior to the NATO Summit. Addressing the participants in the program via video message, Presidency's Director of Communications Fahrettin Altun stated that NATO has been the most effective security alliance in terms of ensuring regional and global security since the day it was founded.
Noting that the alliance has always been able to adapt to changing conditions during and after the Cold War, Altun stated that the alliance has played important roles in ensuring security and stability not only in the Euro-Atlantic region but also in the global arena for years. Stating that the global system has gone through a comprehensive change and transformation process, Altun conveyed that serious ruptures have occurred in many areas and the balance of power has changed. Altun emphasized that the tests on the security axis have diversified and that the measures to be developed against these tests are not limited to military elements.
'WE ARE WITNESSING THE RISE OF DISINFORMATION'As an indicator of this change, Altun, who drew attention to the fact that information manipulation and intervention by foreign actors has been one of the prominent security threats in NATO’s strategic communication approach in recent years, noted the following: “In the last 10 years, we have been witnessing the rise of technology-based hybrid threats, information manipulation and disinformation as extremely serious challenges. The need to implement new strategies and policies based on communication, media and technology against these threats, which have become a global security problem, is increasing day by day. The development of the alliance’s capacity to combat these challenges has now become mandatory and inevitable. Therefore, strategic communication and public diplomacy are increasingly prominent in the security approach of allied countries. These areas are of great importance not only in terms of constructing effective narratives and ensuring the truth prevails, but also in terms of strengthening solidarity and cooperation among NATO member countries. For the future of the alliance, the development of a common perspective in strategic communication and public diplomacy is a critical element of our collective security quest.”
'WE CAN BUILD MORE EFFECTIVE AND INNOVATIVE COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES'Altun emphasized that Türkiye, as one of the countries that has taken part in NATO missions and operations the most, has been the key to peace and justice both in its immediate region and globally, and has made intense diplomatic efforts in this direction in recent years. Underlining that Türkiye has come to the forefront in recent years not only in the military sense, but also with its experience in areas such as combating disinformation, strategic communication and crisis communication, Altun said, "With its transparent, truth-oriented and proactive communication approach, our country makes significant contributions to the Alliance's work in this context, as well as at the national and international level." Stating that Türkiye can build more effective and innovative communication strategies that will strengthen collective security with its allies in this period when information-based threats are increasing, Altun added that they are open to cooperation and mutual experience sharing in this regard.
