The 13th Animators International Film Festival begins

The Animators International Film Festival, which will take place in Istanbul from October 20-26, will bring together animation lovers and animation artists.
The festival, which will be held at the Institut français (Taksim), the main hall and small Pera hall of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Beyoğlu Cinema, the BlackBox hall on the ground floor of the Türkiye İş Bankası Painting and Sculpture Museum, the Gazhane Museum in Kadıköy, and the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum, offers a rich program.
The program of the 13th edition includes screenings of short and feature films, masterclasses, talks, workshops, a conversation and the now-classic "Respect Generation" segment.
COMPETITION AND AWARDSThe jury for the 13th Animators International Film Festival includes animation veterans Florence Miailhe, Tomàs Welss, and Sine Özbilge. The SİYAD jury for the competition includes Assoc. Prof. Gül Yaşartürk, Elif Tunca, and Tuba Büdüş.
The festival's International Competition will present Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best First Film, Best Student Film, and Best Sound Design awards. The National Competition will present Best Turkish Film, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Design, and Best First Film awards. The SİYAD award and an Audience Award, determined by audience votes, will also be presented.

Festivalgoers will be able to watch two short film selections by Florence Miailhe, comprising 13 films produced between 1991 and 2024. FESTIVAL PROGRAMAt the Festival, short competition films from 28 countries are presented to the audience under 9 different themes. In addition to these, a special selection awaits the audience under the title of Gaza Children's Selection.
Flourishing Dystopias!
This section of the festival brings together stories that flourished in the shadow of urbanization and industrialization. Films depicting the lives squeezed by the rapid transformation of cities, workers subjected to exploitation, and the unseen costs of change, presenting a dystopian vision of the future while also revealing the realities of the present.
We are here, we are here
The We Are, We Are Here section features films about women's struggles for visibility and their own narratives. These films, featuring women who see life through their own eyes, create space through their very existence, and make their voices heard, invite viewers into a plural and resilient world.
Long live the Forest!
Animal heroes who sometimes embark on adventures, sometimes form friendships, and sometimes confront human cruelty… This section is like a forest where different sounds and tones come together. Each film follows its own path, introducing the audience to the diversity of nature.
Stop Motion: Step by Step Movement
Stop motion, one of the oldest animation techniques, is explored in this section, presenting a diverse range of styles and perspectives. These productions, brought to life through a variety of techniques and unique styles, reveal the magic of animation step by step.
Beyond the Horizon
This category brings together pioneering films that explore unconventional paths and push boundaries with their narratives. These productions highlight diverse aspects of animation, introducing audiences to new languages, experiments, and insightful perspectives.
Long Shorts
This section features productions that, while short, utilize time more extensively, unfolding their narratives slowly. These films push the boundaries of "short," offering viewers the experience of a longer-format short film.
Shorts from World Festivals
This section showcases short films that stand out from international film festivals. This category showcases the latest and most striking productions from world cinema, showcasing the richness of diverse cultures and creative perspectives.
SHORTS FROM TürkiyeShorts from Türkiye brings the colorful and dynamic world of animators in Türkiye to the audience.
OUT OF COMPETITIONThis selection, which is not included in the festival's competition program, brings together notable productions from different countries and their unique narrative styles. In the words of Çağla Aslan, the director of the Animators competition, "The films in our out-of-competition selection this year are creative productions that experiment with different forms of animation and take storytelling to a whole new level. These valuable films, which have won awards at international festivals and have been featured in various categories,

GAZA CHILDREN'S SELECTIONAs part of the festival program, a special 45-minute selection of short animations produced by children from Gaza, Palestine, as part of the Animation Community for Palestine workshops, is being presented to the audience. These works demonstrate that animation can be a form of expression even in the most difficult circumstances, serving as a source of hope and understanding. Animator Haneen Koraz, who led the project, aims to demonstrate the healing power of art through these films, shaped by the imagination and resilience of children.

RESPECT BELT: MERAL EREZ AND CEMAL EREZThis year, the Animators Festival's "Respect Zone" focuses on the work of Meral and Cemal Erez. Cemal Erez, an animation artist, director, translator, and painter who recently passed away, was among the founders of the Animators Association. The duo, "Animators,"

Completing their art education in painting and graphic design at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts (now Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) in the 1970s, the duo specialized in animation at the Instituto delle Belle Arti in Italy. During their long years in France, they produced short independent films. After these films were selected for and awarded by major animation festivals, the duo settled in Istanbul to continue their artistic work and teach animation at various universities. The commemoration program for Cemal and Meral Erez, part of the festival's Respect Zone, featured a speech and film presentation moderated by Dr. Başak Ürkmez.

MASTERCLASSES, TALKS AND INTERVIEWSAs in previous years, the Festival will host masterclasses, talks, and speeches. The Institut français (French Cultural Center) in Taksim will host these events.
Florence Miailhe, the Festival's guest of honor and a member of the jury, will give a presentation about her directing career and her unique approach to animation in the masterclass.
Tomàs Welss, the Chilean member of the jury who is currently working on a feature film in Colombia, will demonstrate the animation technique he uses live, giving examples from his films.
Talk: Distribution and Festival Strategy for Short Films
Esra Güzel and Merve Özcan will present on distribution and festival strategies for short films. This event, organized in collaboration with Cinema Island and Lands of Cinema, is open to anyone creating short animated films.
The film Time Lords will be the focus of an online talk with Xavier Kawa-Topori, an expert on the history and aesthetics of animated cinema. The film, a significant production for sci-fi enthusiasts and French cinema alike, will be told through the NEF

A conversation will be held with independent short animation film directors, moderated by Çağla Aslan from the Festival team.
WORKSHOPSThroughout the festival, workshops on animation production, pop-art and playing card making, animation script writing, and body awareness will be held at the Institut français and the Museum Gazhane.
