Lonely people pose best in life

Director of important films of Turkish cinema such as Innocence, Destiny, and Life

Zeki Demirkubuz's new exhibition, "Lonely People Pose the Best in Life and Photography," opened at the contemporary art center CerModern in Ankara, following its Istanbul exhibition.

Curated by Ebru Yılmaz, the exhibition reveals the theme of "loneliness" that Demirkubuz has explored in depth in cinema, this time through photographic frames.

SELECTIONS FROM THE ARCHIVE

Demirkubuz, who opened his first exhibition, titled "Life," at the Gazhane Museum two years ago, says he brought his new exhibition to life with Ebru Yılmaz, selecting from an archive of 50,000-60,000 photographs.

The introverted characters and genuine narrative language that we often encounter in the master director's films are visible in still images this time.

The master director focuses on unprepared, unformed, natural moments in the photographs he took in geographies stretching from Europe to America, from Asia to Anatolia.

The exhibition includes 30 photographs focusing on states of loneliness…

These frames lack a dramatic plot or a clear story. Therefore, they leave the viewer alone in a "narrative-less" silence, offering the opportunity to encounter moments that produce no words but convey emotion.

NO POSE, THERE IS STANCE

The people, landscapes or objects in the photographs become the expression of a stance rather than being part of a pose.

The director's introspective narrative in the film, combined with reflections in photographs where time is suspended and flows into existence, invites the viewer into a space of individual inquiry into loneliness. Thus, the exhibition transforms loneliness into a person's way of viewing themselves and the world.

The exhibition, realised in collaboration with CerModern and Art On, can be seen every day of the week except Mondays until November 30.
