An upcycling movement

Upcycle Istanbul is a platform that raises awareness about upcycling by using the healing power of art…
It gives important messages for a sustainable future with the 'Upcycle Istanbul Art&Design Festival' it organizes...
The festival, which will take place at the Museum Gazhane between May 15-18 this year with the theme of “Are You Ready to Start the Transformation with Yourself?”, calls on everyone who cares about a sustainable life and a more livable planet to take action.
A FULL PROGRAM
The festival, which draws attention with its multifaceted content ranging from climate crisis to ecosystem loss, from waste-free living to sustainable design, is full of striking events. Exhibitions drawing attention to environmental problems, designs that give waste a second chance, creative workshops, inspiring talks, the Bazaar area where designers who produce with the principle of waste-free living and film screenings will change our perspective on waste and remind us to use our resources efficiently.
PROMISE YOURSELF
One of the most special events of the festival, “Letter to My Future Self” will offer participants both an inner awareness and a permanent reminder. The letters written as part of the festival will include the promises made by the person regarding their own transformation journey and will be mailed to them one year later.
This unique experience will encourage continuity of individual change while also providing participants with the opportunity to observe their own development over time.
What is upcycling?Upcycle Istanbul Art&Design Festival, one of Istanbul's most creative and sustainable events, will open its doors for the fourth time this year.
The terms upcycling and recycling are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are actually completely different. Upcycling can be defined as creating something new and usable from something old and even unusable. While recycling involves destroying waste to create something new, upcycling takes waste and creates something new from its current state. Like turning an old pot into a planter…
When upcycling, the original form is preserved. You can see what the object was and what it has become. While recycling is practical, upcycling is extremely creative and can involve a wide variety of techniques and materials to create the finished product. Reuse and upcycling reduce the need for recycling and are therefore a great option for nature.
Arzu Özarı Semiz, the founder of Upcycle Istanbul Platform, stated that they aimed to inspire each participant to create space for their own inner transformation journey by setting out with the theme of “Are You Ready to Start Transforming from Yourself?” and said the following:
“A sustainable future is shaped by small but meaningful choices in an individual’s life. While every piece of the festival content supports this awareness, the ‘Letter to My Future Self’ event will perhaps be one of the experiences that conveys this message in the most touching and lasting way. These letters that participants write to their future selves are not only a reminder; they are also a strong step that shows that it is possible to make a social difference with personal responsibility…
Upcycle Istanbul will bring together everyone who wants to take steps towards a more conscious future with this special event that focuses on the upcycling of not only materials but also people.
Our festival, which sets out with the motto “To change the world, start with yourself first”, will invite its visitors to transform for the better together.”
