US removes Syrian President Sharaa from global terrorist sanctions list

US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio removed Shara, who was listed as "Muhammad al-Jawlani", from the "Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT)" list, which regulates sanctions against individuals and organizations linked to terrorism.
Pigott stated that this decision conveys "a strong political message recognizing Syria's transition to a new era."
Pigott, noting that the US Treasury Department had also removed Syrian Interior Minister Anas Hattab from its sanctions list, said, "These steps are being taken to recognize the progress made by the Syrian leadership since the departure of Bashar al-Assad. The new Syrian government, led by President Sharaa, is working diligently to locate missing Americans, fulfill its commitments to combat terrorism and narcotics, eliminate chemical weapons, promote regional security and stability, and support an inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process."
Pigott also noted that the United States will continue to support the Syrian people's efforts for peace, stability and reconstruction.
The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution on November 6 demanding the lifting of sanctions against Syrian Presidents Sharaa and Al-Khattab.
