Altan Öymen passed away


Altan Öymen, one of the former leaders of the Republican People's Party, has passed away.
Altan Öymen had been receiving treatment in the hospital for three days.
Öymen had lung surgery last June.
Altan Öymen, who was discharged from the hospital, was taken to the hospital after falling ill approximately five weeks after his surgery.
Öymen was taken to intensive care last night and intubated.
"HE DIED DUE TO MULTIPLE ORGAN FAILURE"
A written statement was made about Öymen's death from the hospital where he was treated.
The statement read, "Our patient, Mr. Mehmet Altan Öymen, who had been followed up in our intensive care unit for three days due to respiratory failure that developed as a result of the rapid progression of the lung infection, lost his life today at 14:38 due to multiple organ failure."

Funeral Program Announced
It was reported that a ceremony will be held for Altan Öymen on Monday, July 21st at 1:00 PM at the Parliament and in front of the CHP Headquarters at 3:00 PM.
It was reported that Öymen's funeral will be held at noon on Tuesday, July 22nd at the Teşvikiye Mosque, followed by burial in the family plot at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
ÖZGÜR ÖZEL: DON'T LET IT GO AWAY, MY PRESIDENT
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made a statement on his social media account following the news of Öymen's death.
Özel said, "We are deeply saddened by the loss of our loyal and selfless Chairman, Altan Öymen, who was a member of our party for 75 years and worked for the Republican People's Party until his last moment." He added, "May God have mercy on him. I offer my condolences to his family, loved ones, the press community he led, our party, and our country."
Özel said, "May his soul rest in peace. May you never be left behind, my chairman. Your struggle is our struggle."
ASLI ÖYMEN: SHE FELL DUE TO A TINY VIRUS
Aslı Öymen spoke to members of the press in front of the hospital following her father's death. She explained that Altan Öymen had been receiving treatment at the hospital for approximately six weeks following lung surgery. "The lung surgery went very well, despite his age," she said. "Everything was back to normal. All his checkups were done for six weeks, we celebrated his birthday, and we started having a good time. He was busy with his homeland, his books, and his writings, just like before. As I've always said, everything was going well. But about 15 days ago, my father's values deteriorated. He succumbed to a virus, a tiny one, actually. He developed pneumonia. We came to the hospital, and we couldn't deal with that pneumonia. He couldn't handle it either. He was 93 years old, and he had book projects he loved to pursue. May he rest in peace. He will be buried next to my mother in our family plot at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery."
BAHÇELİ: I FELT GREAT SADNESS
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahçeli also issued a condolence message. The message, shared on social media, is as follows:
I am deeply saddened by the passing of former Republican People's Party Chairman and journalist and author, Mr. Mehmet Altan Öymen. I pray to God for mercy upon the late Altan and offer my condolences and prayers of patience to his grieving family and the Republican People's Party. May he rest in peace.
MURAT EMİR: HE WAS A CHILD OF THE REPUBLIC CHP Deputy Group Chairman Murat Emir, appearing on NTV's broadcast following the news of Öymen's death, said, "My condolences to our nation. I had known Öymen personally for nearly 20 years. Mr. Altan Öymen was a child of the Republic. He held important positions at every level."
"In recent years, he has been very influential in some of the debates within our party with his influence," Emir said, adding, "He has always helped untangle some knots."

WHO IS ALTAN ÖYMEN?
Altan Öymen was born in Istanbul on June 20, 1932. After graduating from Ankara University's Faculty of Political Sciences, he turned to journalism and worked as a columnist for many years.
He was involved in politics in the CHP for 75 years.
Öymen joined the CHP in 1950. He spent 75 years in CHP politics, ranging from a founding assembly member to a member of parliament, secretary general, minister, and chairman. When the CHP was excluded from parliament in the 1999 elections, Deniz Baykal resigned from the party chairmanship. Altan Öymen was elected chairman at the 27th Extraordinary Congress. Öymen served for 15 months.
He wrote many books
He ran for reelection at the party convention on September 30, 2000, and challenged former party leader Deniz Baykal, but lost the election. He returned the seat to Baykal. From this period on, Öymen incorporated recent history into his books, sometimes through his own testimony. He penned numerous books, including "Once Upon a Time, a Child," "Years of Change," and "Years of Anger."
He became one of the "wise people" of the CHP.
Until his death, Altan Öymen remained one of the CHP's "wise men." Party leaders and executives sought his advice on critical decisions.
Öymen always attended congresses and important meetings and never severed his ties with his party and politics.
