Tripoli is in chaos again: a host of prisoners have escaped from prison, the airport is closed, the army is moving west

A mass prison breakout has occurred in the city of Tajoura, east of the Libyan capital Tripoli, the region's judicial police reported.

According to the Libyan newspaper Al Wasat , clashes have resumed in several areas of Tripoli. "As a result of intense fighting near the Al-Judeida prison, panic has arisen among prisoners, which has led to a mass escape," the judicial police said in a statement.

Most of those who escaped were convicted of serious crimes. Ean Libya reports that flights from Tripoli International Airport were diverted to Misrata, east of the capital, after the clashes began.

According to the Almarsad newspaper, columns of the Libyan National Army (LNA) are moving west from Benghazi towards Tripoli. LNA military equipment has already reached the city of Sirte, located approximately 450 kilometers from the capital. Aircraft are again being redirected to airfields in neighboring cities.

The head of security at the Libyan presidential council, Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, was killed in Tripoli on Monday evening. Gunfire was heard in several areas in the south of the city. According to local media, he was shot dead at the headquarters of the 444th brigade of the Tripoli military region, which is subordinate to the Libyan Ministry of Defense of the GNA. Six people were killed in armed clashes in the capital.

The conflict broke out between forces supporting the presidential council and the GNA Defense Ministry. The Interior Ministry later reported that the situation in Tripoli had stabilized.
