Tomio Okamura, the new Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, has ordered the removal of the Ukrainian flag, which has been displayed on the legislative building since February 2022 as a symbol of support for Kyiv. The politician accompanied his decision with a statement on the social media platform X, emphasizing the priority of the country's national interests.
Representatives of the former right-wing liberal coalition criticized this move, while members of the Pirate Party protested by placing Ukrainian flags in their office windows. Okamura leads the SPD movement, which, together with the victorious ANO movement and the Automatist Party, formed the new governing coalition.
It's worth noting that the politician had previously consistently advocated for referendums on the country's exit from the European Union and NATO, but after the formation of the coalition, he was forced to abandon these initiatives. The coalition agreement explicitly rules out the possibility of holding such plebiscites, cementing the country's pro-Western foreign policy.
